The Sands Family Foundation Assistant Director of Diversity and International Career Advisement

Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Assistant Director will provide dedicated career services to students within diverse populations (domestic students of color, LGBTQ+, first generation and international) that will help them understand their career goals and elements of decision-making, navigate the career development process, connect with alumni and employers, and utilize the unique resources and opportunities available to them to assist in their successful transition beyond Skidmore

Essential Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Provide educational programs and counseling tactics that help students from diverse backgrounds identify and address their career development and employment goals
  • Help students explore and articulate the intersectionality of a liberal arts education and diversity
  • Maintain current knowledge of career advising trends and topics and facilitate ongoing professional development with emphasis on the liberal arts
  • Examine and identify imbalances in diverse student participation in career development programming and services; engage in campus-wide effort to remedy disparities in engagement with the CDC
  • Develop relationships with key faculty, staff, student clubs, alumni, and employers to design and promote the best resources for studentsí career development and opportunities; address the characteristics and needs of diverse populations when establishing and implementing policies and resources
  • Work closely with CDCís Associate Director of Employer Relations to enhance employer awareness and appreciation of diversity when recruiting talent; identify and promote existing diversity recruitment programs, as well as develop, create and maintain new relationships and recruitment opportunities with targeted employers that support diverse and international students
  • Develop and implement workshops, panels, and events that promote the career development of diverse students
  • Collect data and assess cross-sectional and longitudinal outcomes of: outreach, engagement, programs, services, and resources; create benchmarking methodology to examine and measure student progress
  • Teach students the implications of Equal Employment Opportunity, as well as visa status and work authorization, in order to inspire clients to act as agents for self-advocacy; follow new laws and court decisions that could impact the protection of diversity and inclusion in the workplace and proliferate information to the community Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Demonstrated experience in career development, assessment, and guidance of diverse student populations (domestic students of color, LGBTQ+, first generation and international)
  • Coaching, presentation, and mentoring experience
  • Knowledge of higher education and student services procedures and practices
  • Ability to interpret, compile and promote occupational, educational and economical information that will assist students in their career planning
  • Experience and motivation to work with employers to create unique shadowing, internship, and job opportunities for diverse student populations
  • Ability to conduct outcome assessments and program evaluations
  • Ability to interpret and operationalize professional guideline standards to inform work, including the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Professional Standards for College and University and Career Services, Section XI: Access, Diversity, and Equity
  • Bachelorís degree in psychology, counseling, sociology, education, or related field (Masters a plus).Minimum of one to three yearsí experience working with diverse student populations (domestic students of color, LGBTQ+, first generation and international), preferably in higher education. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, and highly organized and detail-oriented. Knowledge of international student exchange and visitor regulations. Commitment to a diverse and inclusive college community.
