   4-Month Intern/Working Student at the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation Situated in the heart of Saratoga Springs, The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation’s “Summer Farm” will begin operation in June of 2019. Located 8 miles from downtown Saratoga, the TRF Summer Farm will share property with the Heading for Home adoption facility. You will have opportunities to work hands on with retired thoroughbred racehorses. This internship is an excellent opportunity to develop horse farm management skills and gain experience in working with the public and local businesses. Working students are very important to all of us at the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, as you are the next generation of professionals in the Equine Industry. Daily responsibilities include, but are NOT limited to: • Daily Operational Needs: feeding/caring for 5 retired thoroughbred racehorses between the ages of 5 and 18, including but not limited to feeding, grooming, picking fields, cleaning and filling water troughs, and keeping facility neat and organized. • Feed and Nutrition: monitor the well being of the horses and their daily intake of feed and water. Watch for any changes in the horse’s physical appearance or mental well-being, and report to staff accordingly. • Assisting in routine medical care, and farrier care. (Holding, assisting veterinarians and monitoring horses during and after this care, and any necessary follow-up) • Record Keeping: Light record keeping including but not limited to farrier, vet work, horse riding, and visitors to the farm. • Marketing: Working with the team at the TRF Saratoga Office to market adoptable horses through video, pictures and word of mouth. • Ground Work and Riding: To the RIGHT candidate, the TRF is searching for a qualified intern to restart these retirees (based on their physical limitations, if any, of the horses) for riding homes and qualified adoptions. • The TRF will partake in weekly open houses for the 2019 Saratoga Summer Meet. Qualified candidates will be able to help at these open houses and showcase horses to the public if the opportunity exists. • The TRF also hosts youth groups and senior centers to come on field trips to the facility. Qualified individuals will be asked to help educate these groups about horses and assist with hands on experiences for those two groups. • The opportunity will exist, for qualified individuals, and based on the horses at the facility, to show in clinics or at events. This is on a limited basis and contingent upon the horses, planning and other events. Requirements: • Candidate will possess a strong riding background with proven capabilities to ride horses of different backgrounds, and handle situations with grace and professionalism. • Letters of recommendation from a trainer/owner/qualified individual will help in the process of choosing an intern, as well as quality video of the individual of under saddle work. Required Skills: Ability to work without direct supervision, reliable and professional, patience with people and animals, self-motivated. Must be proficient in general horse care, riding, schooling, lunging, equine first aid, bandaging. Must be able to work outside in all types of weather, carry up to 50 lbs, and be flexible for shift work. Must have a cell phone with text/email capability, drivers license. This position requires being comfortable with sole charge, working with children, working with seniors, people skills. Fast learner who is positive and a team player is a must. Recommended Skills: Ability to drive a truck and trailer, familiarity with the thoroughbred breed specifically Stipend: $200/week • Work 5 days per week (Tues.-Sat.) morning and evening feedings and riding, occasional mid day events • Potential for occasional weekend events Additional Perk: Applicant will have the opportunity (if they desire) to visit the TRF Second Chances Program at the Wallkill Correctional Facility at least once during the summer. This is a unique opportunity, and applicant must understand this is a prison environment, and so be highly professional and courteous. Applicant must be able to pass a background check and follow all rules of the facility upon visitation. TRF Staff will accompany, along with the Wallkill Vocational Instructor who is the Farm Manager at the Facility.
